Other participants (in the "control team") obtain a typical treatment, such as a medicine already on the market, a non-active placebo medication, or no treatment. When strictly an inpatient procedure, today ECT is usually performed on an outpatient basis. The therapy includes a collection of sessions, normally 3 times a week, for two to 4 weeks. The earlier that therapy can begin, the extra reliable it is.
